The Ironman Triathlon… On a Glass of Water

Posted in Sports Center at 8:25 am by admin

If I could take one thing back from all the ironman training I did over the years, it would be the thousands of laps I did in the pool with the hopes of thrashing out a faster swim time.

If you are an age grouper or a novice Ironman, there is really no point in spending hours and hours in the pool if you are already at the point where you can easily handle the distance. To devote your valuable training time to enable you to complete the swim 4 or 5 minutes faster is a very poor return on your time investment.

It seems that there are many ironman athletes out there who push way to hard in the swim. The excess energy you burn in that opening leg is simply not recoverable and won’t be there for the bike and run.

I firmly believe the reason so many people hit the wall in the marathon, is because they expended so much in the swim. The bike leg just finishes the job of depleting your resources.

There’s no medal for swimming fast. There’s not even a t-shirt if you swim fast and don’t cross the finish line. Even being the very first out of the water means little is you can’t put three events together.

Take for example Kona, 1984. The winning swimmer was Djan Madruga. You might be asking yourself, “who the heck is he?” My point exactly. Djan was a world class swimmer and he beat the likes of Dave Scott, Mark Tinley and Mark Allen out of the water that day. His swim time was 47:48. However, Djan ran a 4:47 marathon and Dave Scott ran a 2:53.

This is where my theory comes in of running an Ironman like your energy, strength and endurance are all contained in a full glass of water when the start gun sounds.

Try and avoid expending half of that glass of water before you even get on the bike. That means your glass could well be down to the last quarter—or less, before you even put on your running shoes. I really believe there is a direct relationship between the Ironman shuffle and a poorly executed swim.

I remember the race where I finally began to understand pace and how best to nurse that all important glass of water right up to the last mile of the marathon.

It began with learning how to swim easier–or–more efficiently, and not faster. I learned how to relax in the water and to use looooonnnng, smoooooth, strokes. I couldn’t believe how good I felt in the swim-bike transtion. I probably used less than a quarter of that glass of energy.

For the first 40 km. of the bike I let myself get into the rhythm of the change of demands on my body before I settled into the race pace I felt I could hold for the remaining 140 km.

I could “not” believe the run. Normally, it was a struggle from mile one. This time I seemed to settle into a rhythm that I could maintain from the very beginning and the usual tiny voice telling me to walk because it hurt so much, never appeared.

To emphasis my point, I remember beginning to count the athletes I passed as the marathon progressed. It was a way of keeping my mind occupied and when I reached 350 that I had passed, I just quit counting, because it became a chore there were so many.

Needless to say, everyone I passed was either faster than me in the swim, on the bike, or in transition—or all three. The whole point is, it doesn’t really matter how fast they were up to that point if they’re walking now. Why spend hours and hours learning to swim faster if you’re going to walk most of the marathon?

Just do the math. Say I’m running about an 8:15 pace like I did that year, from start to finish, and I pass someone at mile 10 and they have begun to walk and end up walking most of the marathon? They’ll probably cross that finish line about 2 hours after me. That’s the same person who swam faster and biked faster than I did. I had half a glass of water left and they were on empty at mile ten of the marathon.

I believe the best place to empty that glass is about 1 kilometer from the finish line. Its about there that the fan support has grown to huge proportions and most important of all you can hear the race announcer at the finish line. Those two happenings will carry you to the finish line. At that point, nothing is going to stop you.

I also think its best to be on empty just before the finish, because like me, if you finish and feel great and have a fast recovery, you most likely crossed the finish line with a quarter of a glass left.

And hey! You don’t want to wonder years down the road if you left something out on the course that day.

My name is Ray and I’m a veteran of over 25 years of endurance events, including 14 Ironman triathlons.

I have created a site called “Ironstruck” that is full of training and racing tips for the first time Ironman.

Los Angeles

Posted in Universe Of Travel at 8:00 am by admin

LOS ANGELES a metropolis, which spans across a thousand square
miles of the great desert basin, mixed together with congested
freeways that run between the ocean and the mountains.

LA is still considered a young city. In the mid-nineteenth century, it
was a community of white American immigrants, poor Chinese
laborers, and wealthy Mexican ranchers, with a population of less
than fifty thousand. Definitely, a difference from what it is now. LA
is known for it shopping malls, palm trees, and swimming pools.
The celluloid self-image of Los Angeles is known all over the world.

The first-time visitor to Los Angeles may well find it to be thrilling
and threatening in equal proportions. It is a very fast-paced city
and it will pick you up and sweep you along whether you want it to
or not. While Los Angeles has many fine-art museums, California
cuisine and a few old-fashioned urban plazas, what people really
come here for is to experience the city that has come to epitomize
the American Dream. This is where teens come to try to become
actors and stars.

Recommendation for first time visitors is to visit places such as
Universal Studios, Mann’s Chinese Theatre, Venice Beach
Boardwalk, Watt’s Towers, Melrose Avenue, Rodeo Drive, Walt
Disney Concert Hall, and let us not forget about the amusement
parks such as Knott’s Berry Farm, Magic Mountain, and Disneyland.

With all the entertainment available in Los Angeles, you are sure
to see a Celebrity or two while you are out and about. There are
many things to do in LA, how about just hanging out at the beach
and relaxing or surfing in the Pacific Ocean. Many things are within
driving distance from LA as well.

Check with your local travel agency for excellent packages to the
Los Angeles area.

Impeccability: The Shaman’s Path

Posted in Baker's Dozen at 7:22 am by admin

Intent, Knowledge, Impeccability

Impeccability

The third key to living in this world as a healer is to incorporate our skills and disciplines into our hearts in the most impeccable way possible. It is not enough to have knowledge or good intentions. The Shaman strives constantly to be the most disciplined and the highest skilled hunter he can be. He is not concerned with his own life, obsessed with any outcome, or allowing himself to give power away to anyone or anything. It is in the control and direction of his power that he hones his skills to become an impeccable hunter in the forest.

A Shaman is a warrior, a hunter. He is on his highest alert, fully prepared, moving deliberately with his intention held firmly in place in the forefront of his mind. He is ready for anything, being emotionally centered although feeling the excitement of the hunt and the anticipation of the successful outcome. No one could sneak up on a good hunter. It is he who is doing the stalking. The hunter knows his skills, has practiced a long time, and knows where to look for the game he needs. A hunter has heightened his senses so he can smell the wind and see in low light. He knows a bear or wolf can attack him at anytime so he does his very best every minute. To do less may mean his death.

What causes the Shaman to seek impeccability?

The Shaman knows that death walks with him on his left side close enough to reach out and touch him at any moment. It is in this understanding that all we have is today, right now, to be the best we can be, that we are called to be constantly walking the path of impeccability. When one’s mortality is always a present thought we begin to see our lives with different eyes. Ask anyone suffering from a terminal disease and they will tell you how precious it is to watch a sunrise, to see a child sleeping, to hug your dog. We learn to wash the dishes as though it is the last time we may ever wash the dishes. It becomes a ceremony, an act of love and a joy to perform. Death becomes a friend, an ally, a guide to what is most important right now in our lives, what we most need to do and be and say to those we love. There is no time to wait until tomorrow.

When we observe our own mortality we see that it does not matter if we are kings or paupers, rich or poor, famous or unknown. These things have nothing to do with our true selves. The hunter does not sit in the forest and shout out his importance to the trees. He is a hunter, like so many hunters who have gone to this forest before him to accomplish the same goal. He thinks of his brothers and sisters and is honored to sit with them in spirit and share their experience. With a sense of one’s own mortality there comes a sense of humility natural for anyone realizing the larger picture of all of life. It is not about standing taller than those who came before. If we only have today, would we not want to be the best we can be today?

A Shaman has in many ways met his own death; The death of his childhood ideas, the death of his ego and self importance, the death of his emotional surges that would drag him back and forth. The hunter has a personal relationship with death, not one of adversary but one of necessity and even sustenance. Walking with this understanding allows one to see the beauty in every vision, every action, and every moment of one’s life. It is not about becoming perfect. Perfection is striving to be one better than your neighbor, to achieve status, to break a record. Perfection causes striving and since it is never attained, it leaves the striver unfulfilled, unhappy and unsatisfied. But a life lived impeccably is filled with joy, with wonder and with satisfaction that every action, thought and word was the very best effort one could make. This is the core of loving yourself in the highest and truest form.

A Shaman in his awareness of his mortality finds himself much more alert and aware, trying to drink in everything around him. Thus, he gains knowledge on a level not approached by others. This knowledge then hones his sense of awareness and he sees the work of deeper energies on the earth and studies them with excitement and a natural thirst for improvement. This in turn engenders even more honing of skills causing more awareness and so impeccability is naturally engendered not through pride or perfection but through awe and experiencing all that can be experienced in the short time he has. This is the true source of personal power and this power is only available by living an authentic life.

Become all that you can be.

Taiwan president looks for stronger ties with China and US

Posted in Business Opps, News Portal at 7:50 pm by admin

Taiwan president-elect Ma-ying Jeou, 57, was recently inaugurated and promised the people of Taiwan that he will drive the nation towards economic stability, starting with improving existing relations with larger rival, China.

However, Ma predicted that reunification with China will not happen during his term. Taiwan broke off from China in 1948 amidst a civil war. Despite the Chinese threats of invasion, Taiwan is still independent and desires to remain so.

Ma, in his inaugural speech, stated that he would like to foster ties with China’s booming economy. Initial projects under Ma’s administration include direct commercial flights between the two countries and opening of Taiwan’s doors to Chinese tourists.

Analysts, on the other hand, predicted that growing ties between Taiwan and China would not suit well with the United States government, especially regarding commerce. Under the provisions of Ma’s proposal for economic growth, Chinese investors permission to purchase commercial real estate would dampen US businesses in the region. However, in speaking with Ma, analysts like Sean King of Park Strategies see much to be cheerful about in future relations between Taiwan and the United States.

Barack Obama, candidate for US presidency, urged the administration to open all channels of communications with Taiwan and continue to support the democratic stance of the country. Obama has also stated that supply of armaments is necessary to deter any aggressive action China might take.

Orlando, Florida is filled with attractions for vacationers of every age group; it is known for its beaches, golf courses, night life, museums, restaurants, and theme parks. Three all-time tourist favorites include Disney World, Busch Gardens, and Universal Studios, Florida.

Disney World:

The home of Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck is a perennial favorite with not just kids for whom it offers a mind boggling range of things to see and do. The overwhelming extent of experiences that Disney World offers ensures that adults too have a great time. Accommodation at Walt Disney World, which has over twenty hotels, offers a choice to suit every wallet. The Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Disney Contemporary Resort are two of the most popular resorts with a unique theme and excellent service. Vacationers can take advantage of the various promotional packages offered by Disney World from time to time. In one visit, it is not possible to take in all the rides and get one’s fill of everything that Disney World has to offer; however there are some classic rides such as Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Peter Pan, Primeval Whirl, etc. The Magic Kingdom, which is spread over 100 acres, can be accessed via the Monorail or the Steamer. It has several attractions of which the chance to pose with Disney characters and getting their autographs is high on the wish-list of many children. It is best to enjoy Disney World in the company of a local acquaintance who can point out the major attractions and also the early-entry days during which hotel-guests are allowed to enter early.

Busch Gardens:

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is an approximately one-hour drive from Orlando. Many vacationers find its location, which is away from the hustle and bustle of Orlando, to be an added attraction. The Busch Garden Shuttle Express is a free service with a 5-Park Orlando Flexi Ticket; it’s an alternative for those do not wish to travel to the park by road. Busch Gardens offer several exciting attractions that replicate the wonders of Africa. The wildlife includes more than 2,000 animals and thrilling roller-coaster rides are a hit with the kids and adults alike. The Sky Ride cable car affords an excellent view of the park. Attractions at the park also include the Serengeti Railway that has several stations around the park; the Haunted Lighthouse, which is a 4D show for kids over seven; KaTonga, which is a 35-minute musical celebrating African fables; the tomb of King Tut; Serengeti Safari tours; the slides and rides at the Land of the Dragon, and many others. Food at the Busch Gardens ranges from pizzas and turkey legs at Quick Bite and fine dining at the Crown Colony Restaurant. Preferred parking is available alongside the main entrance.

Universal Studios Florida:

Universal Studios in Orlando is the largest studio outside Hollywood. This major tourist attraction of Hollywood has some very popular rides and experiences that are based on hit movies. Terminator 2 is a high-tech 3D adventure; Back to the Future is a simulated ride that has one falling down volcanic tunnels; Twister and Earthquake are other thrill-a-minute shows in which an individual experiences a five-storey volcano and the power of an earthquake. Other attractions at Universal include Kong, Nickelodeon, ET, the Animal Show, etc. The main rides and attractions are at the edges of the oval-shaped Universal plot, which is quite huge. Priority parking and valet parking are available, these make exiting the Universal premises at the end of a fun-filled but tiring day a little easier.

Pacing Your Way to a Successful Internet Business

Posted in Business Opps at 12:40 am by admin

Timing is everything when it comes to building a business on the web. If you think that you can build a viable business in six months or less then you are mistaken. However, if you are patient and systematic, and willing to learn from your own experiences and from the wisdom of others, then you have every chance of being successful in your Internet activities. Here are six lessons that I have learned in the course of building an Internet based business; perhaps they may be helpful to you!

1. Allow yourself a reasonable time to build your business:

I think that everyone really hopes that the day following the publication of their web page, they will find e-mails with orders for their products or services. Unfortunately it doesn’t usually happen so fast. It takes time for search engines to index your
pages. If you are in an exceptionally competitive field, you will also have to build up your website, with valuable content and strengthen it with high quality links from other sites in order to rise to a good position in the search engines. How long does
this process take? If you are very efficient it could be within six months, but I would say that it is better to plan on one year as your “building period.”

2. Stick to the fundamentals

Don’t try to trick the search engines or your customers. In the past, and probably even now, some people tried to fool the search engines through doorway pages, invisible keywords and other shaky procedures. These methods cannot bring long term success. So, build a solid web site, one that truthfully presents your goods
or services, and promote it in a conventional manner through proper search engine optimization, offline promotion in your printed materials, articles in online forums and newsletters, press releases, etc. If you have a good product or service and explain it properly emphasizing the benefits that it can bring to your web visitors, and promote it in a solid way, you will be in a good position to reap the rewards for your hard work.

3. Study and learn as much as you can

It is not possible for everyone to grasp all the technicalities of web design and promotion, but it is possible to get a broad overview of how it all works. Sign up for good online newsletters, visit forums and websites where other webmasters ask
questions and offer advice. If you are in a particular niche market, see if there is a newsletter especially catering to your needs. Over the years I have learned a lot from the LE Digest , originally called Link Exchange Digest. Other good sources of
information are Site Pro News and Web Pro News. If you have some money to spare then you can purchase e-books and printed books on marketing, web marketing and web design. Sometimes just one or two good ideas in a newsletter or an e-book can make a big difference. So, keep on studying and keep on learning

4. Monitor your traffic

When you become successful you will know it by the orders and inquiries that come in your daily e-mail. Until that time, you should pay close attention to your web logs or the web site analysis information that many web hosts provide. Pay particular attention to where your visitors are coming from; that is, what are the referring pages that they visited before entering your site. And pay particular attention to the keywords that they used to find you. If you have some money to invest, then you can also experiment with pay per click listings with Overture.com or other providers. Note which keywords bring you the best results, then optimize your pages for these proven keywords.

5. Make necessary changes to your website

Based on what you have learned, you may have to redesign your web site, rewrite the copy or work on the details of optimization. This may take time or may require additional expenditure, but it could be the step that brings you to success, so don’t be afraid to rethink or redo your website. If you can do it by yourself or
through your in-house team, then go ahead with that. If you need outside help, then hire the best people you can according to your budget.

6. Be optimistic and don’t quit too soon

“It ain’t over till its over,” said the baseball player and sage, Yogi Berra. His words are especially true on the Internet, where conditions change every bit as fast as they do in the world of sports. Just when you think that your efforts have not produced anything, you may find your site popping up at the top of all the search engines, and orders coming into your in-box. So, hang in there and do not give up until you have really utilized your resources properly. If you truly have something good to offer, and if you have worked hard to promote it, the chances are that
your efforts will be crowned with success.

Benefits of Wheatgrass Juice - What, How, and Why!

Posted in Medical Hall at 1:01 pm by admin

Since the late 1960’s, wheatgrass has become frequently discussed in health and medical circles as one of natures greatest gifts. Classified as one of the most abundant superfoods known to man, wheat (and more recently barley) grass has been celebrated for its nutritional content, cleansing and cell regeneration capabilities as well as being in a form that is easily and effortlessly assimilated and digested by our bodies.

The chlorophyll content of wheatgrass alone has been enough to prompt many individuals to consume either fresh or powdered wheatgrass on a daily basis. Being approximately 70% crude chlorophyll, this can have a highly energising effect and a real boost to those looking to alkalise their body.

A discussion on the benefits of wheatgrass juice or powder could be endless - so for the purposes of brevity I have categorised these benefits into four areas. These are the areas that I have found that wheatgrass has benefitted both myself and those around me (family, friends, clients and colleagues).

1. Wheatgrass Builds Blood!

Many health experts including Dr Young (pH Miracle) and Steve Meyerowitz (Nature’s Finest Medicine) have highlighted that the chlorophyll molecule in wheatgrass is almost identical to the haemoglobin molecule in human blood. The only difference is that the central element in chlorophyll is magnesium and in haemoglobin it is iron.

Due to this inherent similarity the human body can easily transform chlorophyll into hemoglobin increasing the red blood cell count as well as the blood’s capacity to deliver oxygen and other nutrients to the body’s cells (Hagiwara, 1985).

Chlorophyll has been shown to build red blood cells quickly, normalise blood pressure by dilating the blood pathways though out the body, destroy poisonous carbon dioxide, release free oxygen and promote higher metabolism and stimulated enzyme systems. On top of all of these benefits, consuming chlorophyll from wheatgrass is a highly effective way to alkalise the blood and energise the body!

2. Wheatgrass Cleanses the Body

Wheatgrass is an extremely beneficial food in terms of both its cleansing capabilities. The contents of wheatgrass juice and powder (green drink) are reported to be within the region of approximately 100 separate elements with scientists dubbing it a ‘complete food’. According to ‘The Wheatgrass Book’ (Wigmore, 1985), just 140g of fresh wheatgrass offers the same nutritional value as over 3kg’s of fress green vegetables!

Wheatgrass is a great source of vitamins B, C, E and carotene which are hugely effective in destroying and eliminating free radicals and cleansing the body. Wheatgrass is also highly regarded for its ability to cleanse the blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract.

Because it is also high in saponin, wheatgrass offers excellent support to the lymphatic system, helping to carry away hundreds and thousands of toxins from the cells of the body. Kulvinskas (Survival into the 21st Century, 1975) wheatgrass helps to ‘detoxify the body by increasing the elimination of hardened mucous, crystallised acids and solidified, decaying faecal matter…It is the fastest, surest way to eliminate internal waste and provide an optimum nutritional environment’.

These are just some of the cleansing benefits of wheatgrass, and I have barely scratched the surface with regards to listing its nutritional content. Put most simply, whether you are looking to undertake a formal cleanse, or simply try to add more nutrition to your diet - these reasons alone are enough to consider adding wheatgrass to your daily lifestyle.

3. High Amino Acid Content

You may have heard the expression before that - amino acids are the building blocks of protein. They are absolutely essential to our growth and cell regeneration. It is the astonishingly high amino acid content in wheatgrass that is leading to many bodybuilders and gym-goers incorporating fresh or powdered wheatgrass juice into their daily routine.

Wheatgrass juice is a complete protein and contains, amongst others, the following amino acids: arginine, serine, absenisic, lysine, aspartic acid, glycine, alanine, methionine, leucine, tryptophane, phenylalanine, and valine.

4. Wheatgrass Fights and Protects Against Illness

Organic wheatgrass powders and juices are an extremely effective way of boosting the body’s immune system to fight against and recover from illnesses and ailments. Wheatgrass is a great source of beta carotene, contains most of the B vitamins and vitamins C, E, H and K, and also contains over 90 different minerals and 19 amino acids. It also contains several active enzymes which play a major role in breaking down fats, undertaking biological functions and assist hugely in weight loss.Of the 90 minerals found, many of these are very alkalising and include calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron.

Many of the health benefits of wheatgrass stem from the faact that it is a living food. Being highly anti-bacterial, consuming wheatgrass will help to alkalise and detoxify the lymph and blood cells, helping the body to rebuild and transport toxins out of the body quickly and effectively.

Again, coming back to the chlorophyll content of wheatgrass - this can protect the body from carcinogens more effectively than any other food. Studies conducted on animals have shown that wheatgrass consumption has reduced the absorption of a number of very serious carcinogens whilst strengthening cells, detoxifying the liver and neutrailsing polluting elements within the blood.

Conclusion - Incorporating Wheatgrass into Your Lifestyle

Wheat and a number of other grasses are clearly very beneficial to the body and there is a very strong case for making them a part of our daily health routines. There are two principle ways to do so:

  • buy a growing kit/ freshly grown grass and juice at home
  • purchase an organic grass (green drink) supplement

Both have their pro’s and con’s, however, you do not have to do one to get the benefits of the other. Many juice bars are also now selling wheatgrass shots and are including wheatgrass as an ingredient in their other juices.

If you are looking to purchase a powdered wheatgrass supplement, please be sure to check that the ingredients are organic and 100% pure (no fillers!).
