One of C-SPAN’s questions for “open lines” recently was “who’s stronger in National Security, Republicans or Democrats” (i.e., who will keep us safer). Callers weighed in on three different telephone lines (i.e., Republican, Democrat, and Independent). The host picked up calls in rotation, each line getting its turn; very democratic quite honestly. It’s what C-SPAN does best to the unbridled joy and wild accolades of its small but loyal audience.
As far as the responses were concerned, they were predictable. Republicans said they are better because we haven’t been attacked since 9/11. Democrats said they are better because we were attacked on 9/11. Independents claimed neither one is very effective because of conspiracy theory de jour. At the end of the hour segment, I am willing to bet not one listener had a sudden shift in thought, an epiphany of enlightenment, or a fresh point of view.
Of course the question itself is a bellow, used to fire up the dormant coals of minds made up, flaring in sparks of party rhetoric, embers that cool as quickly as they burst. So I listened to the crackling callers, mesmerized by the dancing flames of the unthinking faithful, and I thought about the question and wondered if the question itself was the answer.
“Who’s stronger in National Security, Republicans or Democrats?” There is an implied measure to the success of a National Security policythe number of terrorist attacks on American soil, of which there are only two ever mentioned, the two WTC attacks.
However, there have been others. I reference the definition of terrorism as declared by the CIA: the term “terrorism” means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience.
Based on that definition, I’d have to classify the abortion clinic bombings, Atlanta Olympic Park bombing, and Oklahoma City bombing as terrorist attacks. I’m not sure how one could dismiss them as something other than terrorism. It is important to include these attacks in the context of the larger question on National Security.
Regardless of whether terrorist agents are home grown or imported, they have a few things in common. They are convinced 1) some egregious assault has been perpetrated by the U.S. government on their rights or their beliefs or their faith, and 2) killing people is the only option available to them to make their point. In short, they live in a David and Goliath fantasy with one significant difference. David is capable of slinging stones of mass destruction now.
Given our porous borders, given our freedoms, given our diversity in people, given our wealth, given our impatience, given our unrivaled position of power in the world, given our addiction-like dependence upon the resources of troubled countries, given the mountains of Pakistan or the vast wilderness of the Northwest, given cell phones and wireless internet access, given all of this, short of locking everyone up, National Security can only do so much.
Yes, tighter security along all our borders is a wise venture. Yes, tighter security at airports is an important pursuit. Yes, sharing information among our various national security agencies is critical. Yes, chasing and disrupting Bin Laden in the rugged terrain of Pakistan is an important undertaking. Yes, surveillance of hate groups and extremists within the U.S. is a useful tool. Yes, a refreshed Patriot Act is an important instrument. Yes all these things are critical to uprooting future dangers.
On the other hand, the faulty reasoned Iraq War and our contrived policy of building an island of democracy in the Middle East is both American arrogance at its nave worst and detrimental to any honest attempt to draw hearts and minds towards loftier heights. And let’s not underestimate the contention the war has created at home, slowing progress on many of the more important fronts.
In addition to the misguided Iraq policy, using the increasingly meaningless words “war on terror” as a drumbeat to over-extend the power of the President or to rein in certain freedoms or to give fodder to Howard Dean’s latest diatribe or to open up the Alaskan wilderness to oil drilling for that matter, is another hindrance in protecting our homeland. “War on terror” has become about as definitive as “Threat Level Orange”. Who cares anymore?
The fact is we are doing some smart things and some dumb things. But even if we did all the right things the right way at the right time, attacks still might occur. And the timing won’t be determined by who is wearing the watch.
Asking a question like “who’s better at National Security” or “are we safer” and expecting an actual answer, reveal a country that is deeply delusional by thinking it can prevent something that is a part of the fabric of a changed worlda world in which radical ideologies are not conveniently contained within physical borders but quietly networked through websites, discreetly funded electronically, and silently called to action by emails or cell phones. It is a world in which smaller is more nimble, more elusive, more dangerous. To put it another way, a handful disenfranchised people with an irrational beef in possession of significant weapons can cause a lot of damage. And there ain’t much we can do about it.
To endlessly debate whether one political party can protect us more than another is a pointless exchange. No one has an answer that is factual or means much. All we do is incessantly spew our opinions as if they were truths, while our national arrogance continues to miss one opportunity after another to sway hearts and minds, possibly reducing the number of small people with big complaints and bigger weapons.
The answer to the question is who the hell knows and who the hell cares. Now let’s get back to the business at hand.

Indiana payroll law mandates no more than $3.02 may be used as a tip credit.
In Indiana the payroll laws covering mandatory rest or meal breaks are only that minors under 16 must have 30 minutes during 3rd-5th hour of shift lasting at least 6 hours.
There is no provision in Indiana law concerning record retention of wage and hour records therefor it is probably wise to follow FLSA guidelines.

loom large over any potential growth in diplomatic ties to the world’s wealthy
powers, regardless of its economic success.

There is now a way to use underwater devices, special torpedoes dropped from aircraft well ahead of the drug runners without them knowing, which will not only intercept them, but sink them in second, not minutes, with no explosions, just instantly making them disappear as if lost in the Devil’s Triangle.
This new concept device can be dropped from any of the United States coast Guards current aircraft equipment. It is a torpedo device with compressed methane, CO2, Hydrogen, Natural Gas, Oxygen that lands in the water and is controlled by satellite guidance system SGS, using the latest GPS technology or by LOS Line of Sight communication, or NLOS - Non-line of Sight RF. The torpedo is dropped out of the aircraft to loiter near the path of the approaching craft, as the craft approaches it maneuvers itself into the direct track and trajectory of the target. The craft then remains about 20-40 feet below the surface of the water and as the craft approaches lets all the compressed gas escape at once. The Target then falls into open space created by the gas trying to get to the surface and falls like going off a water fall as the gas escapes to the surface creating the cavity. The target will tumble and be a total loss. The sea will immediately close in behind it swallowing up the vessel. Done deal.
The Torpedo shaped carrier devices then films the sunken vessel remains underwater and floats back to the surface, where an ELT -Emergency locator Transmitter signals the United States Coast Guard of discharge after the escaping gas is depleted. The carrier devices also gives away it’s location automatically by a GeoSat, which is looking for anomalies on the ocean surface such as gas, surface temperature, changes ocean height or temperature. The carrier device now empty floats and awaits pick-up for reloading and next assignment, so it is not wasted. The carrier device has handles on it, which any survivors, although not likely, can grab onto and wait to be apprehended as soon as the carrier device is ready for retrieval in a few days or when ever?
There is no way to escape this strategy, except to do what the RAF pilots were told to do in their Spitfires in WWII, never fly straight and level for more than 30 seconds. If the operator of the hydro skimmer is constantly changing it’s course, trajectory and vectoring, then that will show up on satellite and radar and it will then be a known drug target or threat of some kind. Since only someone with something to hide would exhibit such behavior.

Most people passionately desire inward happiness but just don’t know how to get it. Maybe the answer is too simple. In an effort to find a more complicated solution to the problem, people tend to run away from what they are actually looking for.
The secret of personal contentment and peace of mind is to simply decide for yourself that you appreciate what you have and know that you are doing your best.
Overriding every other thought pattern throughout a person’s life is his self-esteem. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, your ego is at the root of every move you make. You can’t feel very good about your household, your job, or anything else unless you first feel good about yourself. The way you feel about yourself determines the quality of the work you do and the quality of your life in general.
Feeling good about yourself reflects in the way you walk, think, act, look and the way you treat other people. Every element of your being is affected by your attitude toward yourself.
You must look your best to feel your best. You must feel your best to perform your best. Feeling good about yourself, both inside and out, should rank quite high on your list of priorities.
Keeping yourself neat and clean are vital in establishing self-respect. Without positive emotional reinforcement, your physical health is affected in a negative way. When everything about you feels “just right,” this up-beat and inspirational feeling generates through your entire physical system, sending beneficial impulses to all areas of your body and can tremendously affect your physical health in a positive way.
Where there is life, there is hope. Having something to look forward to is the most effective antidote against any poison of negativism. Hope is nature’s medication distributed freely among the human species. Perceiving a bright future is seeing the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. The brighter that light leading into your future shines, the more strength you derive to deal with negative circumstances in the present.
Knowing some detail of your existence isn’t right, that something has been left undone, can psychologically work you over. Until this right is made, your system will attempt to shut down, generally resulting in a feeling that you’re tired but you know you have no justifiable reason to feel this way. This “unfinished business” malady is commonly known as “stress.” Ironically, those who care the most, those whose standards are the highest, are those who suffer the most.
Everyone has time to improve himself, his home environment or any area of his life if it is important enough to him. Everyone also has limitations, but self-determination and will power will allow you to find ways around these pitfalls if you are truly dedicated to your objective. Never stop looking for ideas and ways to improve your life to make it more comfortable or just plain happier.
In everything you do, give your best effort. If it’s worth doing, then it’s worth doing well. Giving 100% in everything you do is your own personal golden touch. Giving your best repays you with a satisfying sense of accomplishment and self worth that makes you happy with yourself. If you are happy with yourself, you can consider yourself one of the richest people on earth.
Knowing you have done all you can transmits a sense of personal satisfaction that radiates to all avenues of your existence. This is peace of mind, the most sought-after treasure in life. Peace of mind cannot be purchased at any price because it’s not for sale. It is a gift from God and is most often attained by means of self-sufficiency and, quite often, with a little depravation thrown in for good measure.
