Checkers Strategy Guide

Want to be a checkers champion? You need to develop your strategic, forward-thinking skills in order to become a champ. This guide provides advice on how to achieve various accomplishments in a game of checkers. Taken together, these can form the basis of a winning checkers strategy.

When you’re giving up a single checker in order to capture two or three checkers belonging to your opponent, you’re doing something right. (This is also a winning chess tactic.) Never be content to trade one capture for one capture. Checkers is like business. You should always be looking for a better deal or an advantage over your competitor.

Don’t let your opponent get kings. You do this by blocking your kings row. If he can’t get a king, then even if you only have a single king, you have a huge advantage over him. Kings are important, so this is a two-side goal: prevent your opponent from making kings, and make kings yourself.

Study checkers strategy books. Chess is the game with the reputation for requiring study, but plenty of books have been written about how to win at checkers too. Some good checkers strategy books include How to Beat Granddad at Checkers by John P. Cardie and Play Winning Checkers: Official Mensa Game Book by Robert Pike.

Becoming a winning checkers player is not only possible; it’s reasonably easy if you put in the practice and the study. Is it worth the effort? Depends on how much you like checkers.
